It has been my privilege to serve as the Executive Director of the United Way of Washington County for the past 20 years! Our United Way has served the Washington County area since the 1970’s. Prior to becoming a United Way, we were known as the Community Fund dating back to the 1940’s!
The United Way of Washington County is a local, autonomous nonprofit organization. We are governed by a local volunteer board of directors. United Way of Washington County pays nominal dues to the United Way Worldwide/United Way of America in exchange for important cost-saving services such as staff training, community research information, campaign products and ongoing consultation.
The most valuable asset we have is the trust and confidence of our donors and community. We maintain high standards, and an independent auditor scrutinizes us each year, ensuring that our fundraising procedures remain the most efficient and cost effective.
During 2016, we are funding 14 agencies that provide programs and services to those in need in our community. Our allocation volunteers are trained, knowledgeable volunteers who carefully invest United Way contributions in local programs provided by our funded agencies.
Our United Way functions year round to ensure needs are met on a daily basis. If you are a supporter of the United Way when a disaster “hits” you do not have to ask what can I do—you are already doing. By supporting the United Way of Washington County you are ensuring that we have disaster relief agencies right here in Washington County that will have boots on the ground within hours of a disaster.
I am often asked why give to the United Way and not directly to an agency. The answer is simple. These agencies have chosen the United Way to fundraise for them, which reduces costly and time-consuming fundraising efforts on the part of the agencies and frees them to concentrate on their programs and services. Also, you as a donor have “peace of mind” in knowing that the allocation committee is providing oversight which ensures agencies adhere to sound fiscal policies, and that your contribution is invested in programs in your community which do the most good.
I thank those donors who have contributed consistently to the United Way of Washington County and would ask anyone who has never done so to please consider making a contribution. Also, get involved by becoming a United Way volunteer or volunteer with one of our funded agencies. I truly believe that the success of our local United Way makes a huge difference in whether or not the needs in our community are truly met. Thank you for your generous support of our United Way of Washington County!
With heartfelt thanks,
